The Ngorongoro Crater safari is the biggest single day in northern Tanzania: a descent onto the floor of the world's largest intact volcanic caldera, where 25,000 large animals live inside walls that rise 600 metres on every side. It is the surest Big Five day on the whole circuit.
From the rim the crater is a map spread below you: pale grassland, the soda shimmer of Lake Magadi, the dark ribbon of Lerai fever-tree forest. Then the vehicle drops 600 metres down a steep access road and the map becomes a world.
The floor is dense with wildlife. Lion prides lounge in the grass, elephants with vast tusks pick through the forest, and this is the best place in Tanzania to find the critically endangered black rhino, completing the Big Five in a single morning. Thousands of wildebeest, zebra and gazelle graze the plains, while hippos wallow at Ngoitokitok spring.
Ngorongoro collapsed some two to three million years ago, and its walls now trap a self-contained ecosystem with its own weather. Flamingos wade the soda lake in pink drifts, and Maasai still bring their cattle down to graze and water alongside the wildlife, a rare coexistence found almost nowhere else.

This is a long day with an early start and a fair amount of driving, roughly three hours each way from Arusha; guests staying in Karatu are much closer. The crater floor can be cool and dusty, so bring layers.
Many travellers give the crater more time by staying overnight nearby. Ngorongoro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; more at UNESCO. Pair the day with a Maasai boma cultural experience or a longer Tanzania safari.
