Mount Kilimanjaro rises to 5,895 metres above sea level and is Africa’s highest mountain. Reaching its summit requires preparation, suitable equipment, experienced guides and a thoughtful acclimatization plan.

Where is Kilimanjaro?

The mountain is in northern Tanzania, near Moshi. Most international trekkers arrive through Kilimanjaro International Airport and travel to the trekking gateway with their operator.

Popular trekking routes

Common routes include Machame, Marangu, Lemosho, Rongai and the Northern Circuit. They differ in duration, scenery, accommodation arrangements and acclimatization opportunities. Longer itineraries often allow more time to adjust to altitude.

Altitude and safety

Altitude illness can affect anyone regardless of fitness. Follow your guide’s pace, communicate symptoms promptly and never ignore worsening headache, nausea, confusion or breathlessness. Seek individualized medical advice before travel, especially about altitude-related risks.

Best time to climb

Many trekkers prefer the generally drier periods from January to early March and June to October, although mountain weather remains unpredictable year-round.

Training and equipment

Build hiking endurance, practise long walks on uneven terrain and test your boots before departure. Review our Kilimanjaro trekking packing list and weather guide.

Responsible trekking

Choose licensed operators who prioritize guide and porter welfare, safe trekking practices and responsible waste management.
