Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha: Transfers and Arrival Tips

Prepared by Milele Expedition · Reviewed 13 October 2026

The simplest way to plan a Kilimanjaro Airport to Arusha transfer is to arrange your pickup before flying and share your flight number, arrival date and hotel address. You can also enquire about airport taxis or shared transport, but confirm the destination, current availability and full fare before setting off.

Kilimanjaro International Airport uses the code JRO. It is not Arusha Airport, which uses ARK. Getting that detail right avoids one of the easiest mistakes to make when booking a northern Tanzania arrival.

Where will your transfer take you?

“Arusha” can mean the city centre, a lodge outside town or accommodation farther towards the safari circuit. Those are different journeys. A driver cannot give an accurate pickup plan from the hotel name alone if several properties use similar names.

Send a map pin or booking address alongside your reservation. If your lodge is beyond Arusha, tell your operator before booking a city transfer. Confirm whether the vehicle will take you directly to the property or to a meeting point.

Compare the main transfer options

Pre-arranged private transferMeeting point, waiting policy, hotel address and luggage spaceTravellers wanting a direct pickup

The airport operator lists taxi and shared shuttle services. Treat published information as a starting point and reconfirm fares and operations close to your arrival. A shuttle may not deliver you to your hotel door.

How long does the journey take?

Allow for a road transfer rather than assuming Arusha is immediately outside the terminal. The exact time depends on your hotel, traffic, weather and road conditions. Immigration and baggage collection add another variable before the drive even starts.

Ask for a realistic estimate for your specific property. Avoid booking a tightly timed activity using the aircraft landing time as the pickup time. For a same-day domestic connection, the transfer is only one part of the time you need.

What to send when booking

Give your driver enough information to track the arrival and identify your group:

  • Arrival airport code: JRO.
  • Flight number and airline.
  • Arrival date and local landing time.
  • Lead traveller’s name and reachable phone number.
  • Number of adults and children.
  • Number and size of bags, including bulky equipment.
  • Full hotel address or map pin.
  • Any child-seat, accessibility or special vehicle request.

If your flight lands after midnight, check the calendar date carefully. An arrival at 00:30 belongs to the new day.

Meeting your driver

Before travel, obtain the meeting point and the name or sign your driver will display. Keep the operator’s contact number offline so you can call if mobile data is unavailable.

Complete arrival formalities, collect your luggage and use the agreed exit. If you cannot locate the driver, contact your operator rather than leaving with someone whose identity you cannot verify. Confirm the destination again before departing.

If a bag is delayed, notify the driver while you deal with the airline. Ask in advance how additional waiting is handled; different services have different policies.

How much does a transfer cost?

There is no single price that covers every Arusha transfer. Vehicle size, destination, arrival time and added stops can change the quotation.

Request the total fare in writing and ask whether it includes waiting, parking and hotel drop-off. Confirm the payment currency and method. For groups, check whether the quoted amount is per vehicle or per person.

Milele can provide a quotation through its airport and hotel transfer enquiry. Use your real arrival details rather than a general request for “an airport taxi.”

Can you add a day experience?

A relaxed local stop can turn a spare arrival or departure day into part of the trip. Coffee, a city experience or a meal may work if opening times, luggage arrangements and your energy level allow it.

Keep the plan flexible after an international flight. A fixed-time park visit or a distant waterfall can be difficult when the aircraft is late. On departure day, the airport check-in deadline should determine the plan, not the other way around.

Private custom day trips can be shaped around the time actually available.

Connecting between JRO and ARK

If you land at Kilimanjaro and depart from Arusha Airport, you need an overland transfer between two separate airports. Check the departure airport printed on the second ticket.

Allow for entry formalities, baggage, the drive and domestic check-in. Ask the airline whether separate tickets provide any protection if the first flight is delayed. Where possible, avoid making an expensive safari dependent on a very tight connection.

Frequently asked questions

Are Kilimanjaro Airport and Arusha Airport the same?

No. Kilimanjaro International Airport is JRO; Arusha Airport is ARK. Your pickup and onward flight must be arranged for the correct airport.

Can I get transport on arrival?

The airport operator lists taxis and shared transport. Confirm the service currently available, destination and complete price before accepting a ride.

Can a transfer include an activity?

Yes, where the flight, route and activity timings make it practical. Confirm luggage storage, inclusions and the effect of delays before booking.
