Kilimanjaro’s weather changes dramatically with altitude. A warm day near the mountain’s base can turn into freezing conditions, wind and snow near the summit. Pack for multiple climate zones regardless of your travel month.

January to early March

Often relatively drier with generally good trekking opportunities, though cloud, rain and snow are still possible.

March to May

The long-rains period typically brings wetter trails, reduced visibility and more challenging conditions at some elevations.

June to October

Often a popular drier trekking period. Nights and summit conditions can be extremely cold, particularly when winds are strong.

November to December

Short rains can bring variable conditions; clear spells are possible but trekkers should expect rain and changing visibility.

Temperatures on the mountain

Temperature depends strongly on elevation, wind and time of day. Summit-night temperatures may be well below freezing, with wind chill increasing exposure risk. Do not rely on average lowland forecasts to choose summit clothing.

What to pack for the weather

Bring waterproof outer layers, insulating mid-layers, warm gloves, a summit jacket and reliable footwear. See our Kilimanjaro packing checklist and trekking information.
