A Lake Duluti canoeing trip is the greenest half-day near Arusha: you paddle in silence across a forest-ringed crater lake while fish eagles call overhead and colobus monkeys move through the fig canopy. Canoeing is the rarest way to watch wildlife in Tanzania, permitted on only a handful of lakes in the whole country - and Duluti, twenty minutes from town, is the easiest of them to reach.
Forest-ringed Lake Duluti, twenty minutes from Arusha town, is the signature paddle: a volcanic crater lake wrapped in fig and albizia forest, patrolled by giant kingfishers, fish eagles, monitor lizards and colobus monkeys. Calm, shallow and utterly quiet, it makes the perfect nature escape or a gentle half day between safari legs.
For a wilder option, the Momella Lakes inside Arusha National Park sit beneath Mount Meru. These shallow, alkaline lakes each hold a slightly different colour, and their shores are busy with buffalo, waterbuck, hippo and flamingo in season. A guide paddles at the stern of each two-person canoe, so complete beginners are welcome.
When water levels allow, we also paddle sections of Lake Manyara beneath the Rift Valley escarpment, the same shoreline the park's tree-climbing lions look down on.
Safaris stay within sight of a support vehicle, life jackets are always worn, and no route exceeds about three hours of easy paddling.

Each Momella lake wears a different colour because each brews a different algal soup, which is why flamingos favour some and ignore others.
Your guide reads the shorelines as you drift: buffalo bulldozing the reed beds, giraffe stooping awkwardly to drink, fish eagles duetting from the dead trees. The canoes are wide-beamed and forgiving and the morning water is usually glass.

No paddling experience is needed and the water is calm. If you can sit in a chair, you can do this.
Mornings are best: glassy water, active birds and soft light. You will get a little splash, so quick-dry clothing and a dry bag for the camera are smart.
Life jackets are provided and worn at all times, and hippo areas are given a wide, guide-judged berth. Park fees for Momella and Manyara routes are handled in our quote. Details at TANAPA.
