About the Park

Welcome to Chemka Hot Springs

Chemka - also known as Kikuletwa - is northern Tanzania’s favourite rest-day spot: a startling turquoise pool that rises from Kilimanjaro’s underground rivers, ringed by giant fig trees full of monkeys. Despite the name (chemka means boiling in Swahili) the water is not hot but perfectly warm, filtered through volcanic rock and emerging crystal clear, ten metres deep in places yet so transparent you can count the pebbles on the bottom. It is a place to swim at leisure, swing from a rope in the fig branches, and picnic in the shade while tilapia nibble harmlessly at your toes. The drive out through sunflower fields and Maasai rangeland is half the fun. After a dusty safari or a hard trek, few things feel better than this water.

Swimming and relaxing at Chemka

Chemka is most enjoyable as a leisurely swim-and-picnic stop rather than a quick roadside photo opportunity. Light filters through the fig trees onto clear spring water, while shaded areas provide a break from the heat. Depth can vary across the pool and visibility is not a substitute for caution: this is a natural swimming place, not a supervised hotel pool. The access road may be rough after rain, and visitor numbers are often higher on weekends and holidays.

Practical travel tips

  • Bring swimwear, a towel, water shoes if preferred and a dry bag for valuables.
  • Do not jump from ropes or branches unless conditions and local guidance clearly make it safe.
  • Choose a weekday or earlier arrival for a quieter visit, and pack out all litter.

A popular longer-day combination is Materuni Waterfalls and a coffee visit. You can also view the dedicated Chemka Hot Springs experience when choosing a trip.
