About the Park

Welcome to Lake Eyasi

Lake Eyasi is a shallow seasonal lake in the Rift Valley beneath the Ngorongoro highlands, surrounded by communities with distinct histories and livelihoods. Hadzabe and Datoga communities live in the wider area. Some Hadzabe families maintain hunting and gathering knowledge, while Datoga traditions include pastoralism and skilled metalwork. Visits should be locally facilitated and respectful of community preferences. An early visit may include a locally guided walk or a cultural exchange when communities welcome visitors; activities depend on the hosts and the day’s circumstances. The lake itself draws flamingos and pelicans when water levels rise, set against a raw, beautiful landscape of baobabs and acacia. It is a full day from Arusha, and often paired with Ngorongoro.

Planning a respectful cultural visit

Lake Eyasi rewards visitors who are genuinely curious about everyday life, languages and landscapes rather than expecting a staged performance. Hadzabe and Datoga communities are distinct groups with their own traditions and livelihoods. A locally facilitated visit may involve conversation, demonstrations or a walk, but activities depend on community preferences and the day’s circumstances. Let hosts set boundaries and ask permission before taking close-up portraits or videos.

Practical travel tips

  • Start early if visiting from Karatu or the Ngorongoro area; travel from Arusha involves a longer road journey.
  • Bring drinking water, sun protection and comfortable footwear for dry, uneven terrain.
  • Discuss photography, community contributions and translation with your guide before the visit.

Consider combining Lake Eyasi with the Ngorongoro highlands or a stay near Karatu. Travel respectfully, allow time for conversation, and avoid treating any community as an attraction.

Common questions

Can I meet Hadzabe and Datoga communities without advance arrangements?

A locally arranged, consent-based visit is preferable. An experienced guide can help with translation, community preferences and suitable timing.

Does Lake Eyasi have water all year?

Water levels vary seasonally. Birdlife, shoreline conditions and road access can look very different between wetter and drier months.
