About the Park

Welcome to Mount Meru

Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and one of Africa’s most beautiful volcanoes, rising to 4,566 m within Arusha National Park and towering over Arusha town. Though overshadowed by its giant neighbour Kilimanjaro - which it frames perfectly on clear mornings - Meru is a magnificent destination in its own right. Its forested lower slopes are alive with wildlife: buffalo, giraffe, colobus monkeys and abundant birds, best explored on foot with an armed ranger. For day visitors the mountain offers cool forest walks, the pretty Napuru and Tululusia waterfalls, coffee farms on its fertile flanks, and sweeping viewpoints, while trekkers use it as a spectacular acclimatisation climb before Kilimanjaro. Green, wild and close to town, Meru is the backdrop to almost every Arusha day.

Walking, trekking and mountain views

Mount Meru offers two very different kinds of visit. A gentle lower-slope walk introduces waterfalls, forests and mountain views without aiming for the summit, while a multi-day trek ascends through several vegetation zones towards the dramatic volcanic crater rim. The longer trek is physically demanding and requires proper preparation; a day out near Arusha is not equivalent to a summit expedition. Wildlife is present on the lower slopes, so park-authorised guides and ranger instructions are essential.

Practical travel tips

Choose a half-day or full-day forest experience if time or fitness does not allow a multi-day summit attempt.
Morning often offers clearer mountain views; bring a light waterproof layer for quickly changing conditions.
For a full trek, allow acclimatisation time and verify current park procedures, accommodation and ranger arrangements.

Common questions

Is Mount Meru a useful trek before Kilimanjaro?

Some hikers choose Meru for mountain experience and altitude exposure before Kilimanjaro. It is a demanding high-altitude trek in its own right, not a substitute for acclimatisation.

Can I walk the lower slopes independently?

Inside Arusha National Park, guided activities and ranger procedures apply. Check your intended route and park requirements before setting out.
