Lake Eyasi is a long, shallow soda lake in the Rift Valley at the foot of the Ngorongoro highlands, and one of the last places on earth to meet true hunter-gatherers. Its shores are home to the Hadzabe, who still hunt with handmade bows and gather wild foods much as their ancestors did for tens of thousands of years, and to the Datoga, skilled pastoralists and blacksmiths who forge arrowheads and jewellery by hand. A dawn visit - joining a Hadzabe hunting walk, then watching Datoga metalwork - is among the most powerful cultural experiences in Tanzania. The lake itself draws flamingos and pelicans when water levels rise, set against a raw, beautiful landscape of baobabs and acacia. It is a full day from Arusha, and often paired with Ngorongoro.
