Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa and the tallest free-standing mountain on earth, rising 5,895 metres (19,341 ft) above the northern Tanzanian plains. Its snow-capped summit, Uhuru Peak, is one of the world’s great trekking prizes - and remarkably, it can be reached by determined walkers with no technical climbing experience.
A climb passes through five distinct climate zones, from lush rainforest to arctic summit, in the space of a few days. Several routes lead to the top - Machame, Lemosho, Marangu, Rongai and Umbwe among them - each with its own character and success rate. With good preparation, the right number of days for acclimatisation and an experienced local crew, reaching the Roof of Africa is an unforgettable achievement.
The best Mount Kilimanjaro climbing route depends on your available days and priorities. Machame offers a varied camping route; Lemosho begins farther west and allows longer itinerary options; Marangu uses mountain huts; and Rongai approaches from the north. More days can provide better opportunities for acclimatisation, but no itinerary guarantees summit success.
Allow time for gradual ascent and changing mountain conditions. Even if the lower trails feel warm, temperatures near Uhuru Peak can be extremely cold. Explore our Kilimanjaro climbing information, weather-by-season guide and trekking packing list. For a shorter mountain experience, see our Marangu Mandara Hut day hike. All Kilimanjaro summit climbs require a licensed guiding team. Check the official TANAPA Kilimanjaro visitor guide for current park guidance.
Kilimanjaro is a high-altitude trek, not simply a long walk, so itinerary length matters more than racing to the summit. A longer route may allow more gradual altitude gain and better rest opportunities. Consider how you prefer to travel: camping routes bring nights under canvas, while Marangu has hut accommodation. Regardless of route, weather and your response to altitude can change a climb; listen to your guides and never ignore symptoms of altitude illness.
Read the Kilimanjaro packing list, route information and seasonal weather guide before planning your climb.
Most established trekking routes do not require technical rock-climbing skills, but altitude, cold, fatigue and several days of hiking make the climb physically demanding.
A longer itinerary can allow more gradual altitude gain and rest opportunities. It does not eliminate altitude illness or guarantee that every person will summit.
