About the Park

Welcome to Arusha City

Arusha is the bustling safari capital of northern Tanzania and the starting point for almost every trip in the region - but it rewards a day of its own. Set between Mount Meru and the Maasai Steppe at a cool 1,400 m, the city mixes tree-lined colonial-era streets, lively markets and a genuinely local buzz. You can trace the country’s story at the Arusha Declaration Museum and the Old Boma, haggle for carvings and beadwork at the Maasai Market, breathe in spices and produce at the central market, and discover tanzanite - the violet-blue gem found nowhere else on earth but the nearby Merelani hills. Add a plate of chips mayai or grilled mishkaki from a street stall and you have a full, flavour-packed day. It is also the natural base for sundowners in the surrounding coffee hills.
