About the Park

Welcome to Lake Manyara National Park

Lake Manyara National Park packs an astonishing variety of landscapes into a compact area at the foot of the Great Rift Valley escarpment. In a single day you can travel from groundwater forest alive with baboons and blue monkeys, through open woodland, to the shores of the soda lake itself.

The park is famous for its tree-climbing lions, an unusual behaviour rarely seen elsewhere, and for the vast flocks of flamingos that gather on the alkaline lake. Elephants, giraffe, buffalo and huge troops of baboon are all common, and the birdlife - over 400 species - is exceptional. Manyara makes a perfect first or last stop on a northern-circuit safari.

Making the most of Lake Manyara

Lake Manyara works particularly well for travellers who enjoy changing scenery and birdlife as much as searching for big mammals. Begin in the shady groundwater forest, where primates and birds thrive, before exploring woodland and permitted viewpoints towards the lake. Its water level changes with the seasons, so flamingo numbers and shoreline access vary. Tree-climbing lions are a distinctive possibility, not a guaranteed sighting, and patient wildlife watching often brings the most rewarding encounters.

Practical travel tips

  • A day visit fits naturally between Arusha and the highlands around Karatu.
  • Bring binoculars for forest birds and waterbirds; conditions are different from open-plains safaris.
  • Follow designated routes, keep food secured around monkeys and respect ranger instructions.

Pair Manyara with Ngorongoro or Tarangire for contrasting landscapes. Review the official park visitor guide for current access details.

Common questions

Can I see tree-climbing lions at Lake Manyara?

It is possible, but not guaranteed. Lake Manyara is also worth visiting for groundwater forest, elephants, primates, waterbirds and Rift Valley scenery.

Is Lake Manyara possible as a day trip from Arusha?

Yes. Allow roughly two to two-and-a-half hours' driving each way plus time in the park. Starting early leaves more time for the game drive.
